I am pretty sure you have been reading news about WordPress aquiring BuddyPress and hiring Andy Peatling, the developer behind BuddyPress, a social network built on top of WordPress. with BuddyPress now becoming an official WordPress project.
So what’s the whole hoorah about? Well to start it off Andy Peatling of BlazeNewMedia.com created a fully fledged social network aimed at female college students by using WordPress (MU).
You can view that female college student project at Chickspeak, amazing to think that the whole site is based on WordPress and Andy even took the time to explain a little on how he created the site.As you can see that’s pretty impressive work and Matt (founder of WordPress) had this to say:
It’s clear that the future is social. Connections are key. WordPress MU is a platform which has shown itself to be able to operate at Internet-scale and with BuddyPress we can make it friendlier. Someday, perhaps, the world will have a truly Free and Open Source alternative to the walled gardens and open-only-in-API platforms that currently dominate our social landscape.
We have all heard of how flexible WordPress can be as a CMS and all but this is a whole new level and it got me excited on the possibilities on using WordPress to create some other sites i have in mind.

That’s great news, I discovered Andy’s social solution last summer while looking for my own. I ended up using Ning.
